Winter season at Haven Memory Care

Winter months are special at Haven Memory. Our team at the esteemed memory care center starts preparing meticulously to give residents the ultimate comfort and a chance to reconnect with their inner self, their families, and inmates.

By creating a safe and cozy environment in the center and inculcating celebration in the routine, our team turns the atmosphere warm and festive.

Winter arrives with unique needs for individuals needing Alzheimer’s care and dementia support. We strive to create opportunities that help residents connect emotionally. These moments become therapeutic and give residents a chance for meaningful interaction with each other and enrichment activities.

Indoor Winter Activities That Spark Joy & Engagement

As the weather turns chilly, residents at Haven Memory engage in indoor activities that stimulate the brain and bring joy and excitement.

Our specialist team handpicks activities that ignite a desire in individuals to engage in cognitive sessions. This opens up the memory pathways, rejuvenates the sensory elements, and encourages independence among the residents.

The activities include:

  • Handcrafting sessions where residents show their talent in arts and crafts. This works as therapy.
  • Baking sessions that engage residents in activities like mixing batter, shaping in molds, or doing the icing, etc. This creates a feeling of togetherness too.
  • Nostalgic sessions that include sharing childhood memories, recalling pleasant events, and exchanging stories with each other.
  • Warm-up sessions that include gentle stretching, chair yoga, and simple walks or dance moments to usher in thrill and to maintain flexibility in winter.
  • Gardening and planting activities, like planting winter herbs in pots, etc.
  • Musical evenings with classic winter melodies in the air, giving residents a chance to showcase their instrumental music talent. This may also feature live performances by residents.
  • Brain exercise games such as puzzles, card-matching, etc.
  • Bible study groups to invoked spirituality.
  • Art and crafts sessions to stimulate memory and cognitive function

The aim of activities is to let residents express themselves freely and enjoy. In addition, it stimulates the brain and ushers in a breeze of excitement and purpose in the lives of individuals with dementia.

Alzheimer's Care

Winter Nutrition: Comfort Foods with Purpose

Alzheimer's Care

Winter is for piping hot, nourishing meals that not only satiate hunger, but also soothe the soul. Nutrition is important in memory care. At Haven Memory, we focus on nutritious wholesome foods during the colder months to keep the body warm and to support cognitive and physical well-being.

Our kitchens fill up with the aromas of warm soups, baked and roasted fruits and veggies, whole-grain dishes, and broths to nourish the body and soothe the senses. We take particular care about hydration. Our beloved residents can sip flavored waters and hot herbal teas while basking under the warm winter sun.

Our professional chefs and nutritionists chart out meal plans as per individual needs. We provide three nutritious meals daily along with unlimited snacks in all seasons. Special meals range from glute-free, sugar free, vegan, vegetarian, low/no sodium, and likewise.

Celebrating Winter Holidays with Loved Ones

Alzheimer's Care

As winter arrives, so does the festive fervor. Holiday celebrations fill the air. Individuals under Alzheimer’s care feel joyful during this season when they are under the festive atmosphere. We organize special events to let our residents smile and be happy.

In addition, we invite families of residents for a get-together, which gives them emotional and sensory comfort. Families can participate in our food-sharing activities, celebrations, and one-on-one visits, where they get to spend time with their loved ones.

We keep our celebrations soothing and tranquil instead of gaudy and noisy. For example, simple but vibrant décor, gentle music, rituals that are familiar to our inmates, and warm conversations filled with cognitive stimulating activities and laughter mark the day.

Prioritizing Health, Safety & Comfort

Winter demands extra care on safety of inmates. The dip in temperature may bring seasonal illnesses. Early sunsets may increase the risk of falls and trips when outdoors. Our staff at the memory care center ensure that all measures are taken to create a safe and healthy environment for residents in all stages of dementia.

These include proper sanitization, proper health monitoring, medication refills, helping individuals take their medication on time, regular hand washing, sleep routines, mobility, exercise schedules, etc. We also take care of the typical “winter blues” that may hit a few individuals.

Emotional Well-Being During the Colder Months

As mentioned above, “winter blues” is something to watch out for during colder months. Individuals with cognitive decline are more vulnerable to seasonal depression and anxiety. The days are short, sunshine might be lesser during some days, the whiteness and the serenity may affect certain individuals and make them feel restless or lonely.

At Haven Memory, we provide structured routines and regular engagement activities to keep our residents happy and motivated. We encourage them to converse more, eat meals together, and spend more time under the sunshine to stay away from brain fog, irregular sleep, and emotional issues.

Haven Memory care center ensures that winter turns into a season of warmth and connections and not of seclusion.

Winter at Haven Memory: Stories That Warm the Heart

At Haven Memory, we have stories that are so heart-warming it makes us feel enriched and more motivated in our efforts to improve our residents’ quality of life.

For example, one of our residents recall how she baked winter cookies and her family enjoyed eating them during the get-together.

Another resident recalls of how happy he felt when he saw the first snow of the season from the window.

The stories depict daily interactions and activities that have turned into beautiful memories for the residents. When we listen to the stories, we feel pleased to know that we could create a space for our residents where they feel loved and cared for in all seasons.

Every season gives us an opportunity to spread warmth and joy within the memory care community and let residents get a new purpose for quality living.
